Summary
TB-500 is a synthetic peptide corresponding to a fragment of thymosin beta-4, a naturally occurring 43-amino-acid protein involved in regulating actin, a building block of cell structure. The published research below is on the full protein, not the fragment that suppliers sell under the name TB-500.
What it targets
A 2004 study in Nature reported that thymosin beta-4 promotes migration of heart muscle and blood vessel cells and improves their survival in culture, forming a complex with PINCH and integrin-linked kinase that activates the survival kinase Akt; in mice whose coronary artery had been tied off, treatment improved early heart muscle cell survival and cardiac function. The protein also reached late-stage human trials in eye medicine: a 2018 account by one of the investigators reports phase 3 trials in dry eye and neurotrophic keratopathy under way at that time. A 2005 review sets out its role in sequestering actin and the tissue-repair properties that follow. No study of the TB-500 fragment itself appears in the literature reviewed for this page.
